Kenny
Abbott and his wife, Delene, are the founders of HIS Children's
Camp, and currently live in Seligman, Missouri. In 1998, Kenny
and Delene left a combined 25 years of management experience with a large
retailer to follow a calling to serve at Covenant
Cedars Bible Camp in Nebraska, a camp similar to HIS Children's
Camp. During those years they soon discovered there was something
special about the weeks that the camp was dedicated to serving children
of abuse. Those kids touched a special chord in their hearts, Kenny's,
especially. He knew how special that week of "escape" was to
those kids. He recognized the looks of distrust and anxiety often masked
as hardness and indifference on the newly arrived campers' faces. The
first day brought seasoned survivors, veterans of a war waged on the helpless
in our society, the children.
Kenny and Delene relished the moments when they caught expressions of joy and freedom lighting up the laughing, smiling faces as kids raced from one activity to another. These children were just like any other kids spending a week at camp. They were regular kids and they were safe. Kenny and Delene knew this was what God had called them to do. Their vision of such a haven is HIS Children's Camp, a non-denominational Christian camp which will partner with qualified ministries, agencies and organizations that work with at-risk and special needs children to provide a safe, Christian camp environment where healing can take place. It is their desire to tangibly show the pure love of Jesus Christ to these children. Children will come to the camp through sponsoring agencies, ministries and organizations. The Abbotts' goal is not to control the programming of the camp; but simply to provide a safe and secure place for groups to utilize. The campers' identities and histories will be kept confidential as safety and privacy are of the utmost importance. Unfortunately, there are very few camps that cater to children of specials needs, and even fewer that cater to children who are victims of abuse. Currently, the opportunity for children who are abused to experience a week of normalcy is extremely rare. Kenny and Delene want to change that and you can help.
